When I first moved to Hyderabad I didn’t know much about the city. All I had heard of was the famous Hyderabadi biryani, the Charminar monument and of course the Golconda Fort. Being a foodie I completely forgot about the Charminar and Golconda Fort instantly and I was more interested in finding out what other delicacies Hyderabad had to offer.
We didn’t stay in Old Hyderabad in the main city and so we started experimenting with food outlets and new restaurants around Hitech City and Gachibowli. It seemed like a new one was popping up every week. We had such an exciting time after we just moved here picking a different new restaurant every week to try out all the various cuisines and varieties of biryani too. Soon we found ourselves going back time and again to a few favorites. I’ve learnt that Telangana and Andhra food is so much more than spice and chillies. we had also become quite fond of exciting breakfasts and brunches after living in Bangalore, so we extended out culinary expedition to include great breakfast joints.
These are a few restaurants we will keep returning to Hyderabad for :
My husband’s favorite for sure. This tiny little cafe, run by two young chaps serves the most delectably sinful desserts and churros. Their menu extends to hand crafted pizza’s and pastas, and nibbles as well. And let me entice you to have their Spanish hot chocolate too.
2- Olive bistro
Take your family or your better half out for one of their Sunday brunches and earn some brownie points. Make sure to take plenty of pics at this instagram ready lakeside bistro. Perched on a cliff overlooking an idyll lake, with a Greek style vibe, this calm and peaceful cafe is done up in whites with bursts of color from the bougainvillea adorning the pathways. Food is Mediterranean and delicious. Ambienec is 10/10. This is a great spot for family pics or maternity shoots as it is always scenic here.
Best sushi at a reasonable price in Hyderabad. People craving Japanese cuisine will adore their gorgeous tea house ambiance, the chicken katsu and bubble teas.
The lunch buffet here is a great option for comfort Asian food. Good variety, great service and the Khao Suey is our favorite. If you are with kids, they will even specially make non spicy dishes from the buffet for the little ones at no extra cost.
Located right next to Mamagoto, this place will teleport you to north India with their thick and tasty lassi. The tawa mutton and kebabs here are also fabulous. Go for their buffet to sample all the delicacies they are known for.
Our “go to” home delivery joint was Norfest. They have a new restaurant at PVR Icon theatre in Madhapur now. Must haves, are the galouti kebabs and butter chicken with butter naan. If you’re missing home, their rajma chawal will make you feel warm and fuzzy again.
Did you know there were so many types of biryani and pulav in South India? All are different and have their own distinct flavors. A great place for non vegetarians. Pachhi mirchi Kodi Pulav, Bangla kodi and the bamboo chicken are a must try.
8- Pista house restaurant
This was the first time I tasted Chicken 65 biryani. And it was epic!! Order an extra portion of chicken 65 and you’re all set for movie night at home with some awesome food. Great place for home delivery.
We used to drive all the way to this place for breakfast on a sunday. They have a lot of indian sweets, farsan on sale and their restaurant serves a good variety of North Indian dishes. Their chaats are pure bliss and the chole bhature will take you to heaven, trust me.
10- Hole in the wall cafe
An old Bangalore favorite finally opened their doors in Hyderabad, and boy, were we delighted. A beautifully designed cafe with games, and all our favorite dishes from Bangalore. A good hearty breakfast awaits you here. Be it waffles and pancakes, or eggs and bacon, milkshakes and veggies, etc. Great menu, and great taste.
11- Autumn leaf
Instagram worthy and a nice place to relax and enjoy hyderabad’s lovely windy weather. This kid friendly and pet friendly cafe has the most delicious smoothies and continental food. Set in a villa garden, you can literally spend hours chatting and eating here.
12- Guilt trip
Our favorite dessert cafe. Guilt trip makes the most amazing cupcakes and themed birthday cakes too. Their red velvet chocolate cake is my favorite.
If you’re still looking for more variety , check out these other cafes that are also really great. The Good Cow cafe, Papparoti, Le Vantage, Chutneys, and Simply South.
