I never knew there was a paradise called Nusa Penida… till I saw an instagram page that totally blew my mind!!
About 20 km away from Bali are 3 secluded islands, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan. You can get to Nusa Penida from Sanur beach by the ferry that takes about 90 minutes, or by speedboat which is faster (about 50 min) but more expensive. You can book tickets on the spot.
In this archipelago, the largest island with the purest beaches is Nusa Penida. There are conservation efforts in place as this is home to a lot of birds and turtles. Since its not overrun with tourists, the accommodation options are simple, but with such breathtaking trails along the coast, I think it would be more fun to camp out here. Its a great diving and snorkeling spot with beautiful corals teeming with sea life, and some locations are home to the Mola-Mola ( Ocean sunfish) too.
Cliff diving, exploring secret gardens, hidden beaches, magic, diving with sharks, camping under the stars on the sand.. Wow! Who knew Bali was so full of hidden treasures?
I came across an image on instagram and checked out their website. They are Living the Adventure for sure! Have you seen their instagram page @newbali.info ? You will want to pack up and move to Bali permanently! Nusa Penida is THE place to be if you want to take your travels to the next level. And these guys can help plan your expeditions hiking, camping, diving, jumping off cliffs, observing blue smoke coming out a volcano, etc.
This is one of the itineraries I liked the most, Three Days of Awe and Inspiring Adventure . This package covers three activities: swimming at Secret Garden and jumping off Kembar Waterfall, hiking up Ijen Crater, and snorkeling in Menjangan Island.
Nusa Penida Tours
There is a quaint and locally owned and operated tour company called Nusa Penida Tours that supports the local people and aims to protect their island paradise through their work. They do have some interesting adventures planned for folks who want to truly experience the island as locals. They also offer camping, beach tours and local attractions too. For those of you excited by the occult and spirituality, these are the best people to take you on a culture trip to ‘Black Magic Island’ where you will gain insight into their traditions, the balance of dark and light magic, spiritual history and rituals that form the culture of the native people.
More info on their website.
Places to explore:
- In 3 days you can pack in quite a lot, so you may want to add this destination to a longer island hopping vacation. You can hop over to tiny Nusa Ceningan or Nusa Lembongan for a day trip with its crystal clear water and try sailing.
- The Gili islands are perfect for some laid back beach life and dive expeditions where you can see turtles and even white tipped sharks. They can be reached by ferry from Denpasar too.
- You should also check out Sandy Bay at Nusa Penida which has an awesome beach club, white sand and crashing waves. On the eastern side of the bay, a hidden cave gets revealed in the low cliffs at low tide.. but you better be back before the tide comes in and blocks the exit!
