Our recent getaway to Pondicherry proved to be a complete revelation. It was like opening a door to a secret garden.. We found things we never thought we’d find in this little nook in Chennai. From loaded crepes and tartines to alcoholic ice creams and the most delicious and fresh pizza’s too. We ate it all!
The best part is that there are an astounding variety of vegan and healthy food options available. Read on, for the best places to eat in Pondicherry to sample the local fare as well as the delectable french cuisine this little town is most famous for.
Radisson Blu at Mahabalipuram
Yes, this is not inside Pondi, but why not start your delicious detour on the way itself! Located at Mahabalipuram, on the highway to Pondicherry. Stop here for a fabulous view of the sea with its rough crashing waves and taste some of the most authentic and mouth watering food at their restaurant by the sea. We had the Kerala fish curry and local chicken curry with pulav. A little on the pricey side, but it’s worth it and kid friendly so we stopped there once again on the drive back.
Serenity beach is simply beautiful, quiet and clean. After walking along the shore and enjoying the beach, we came upon Thivu Plage. It’s a simple beach shack with fantastic food and a lovely view. Must try the coconut prawns and the chicken pepper fry. Kid friendly options are available too.
Located in the Tamil quarter, this homestyle restaurant is the right place to taste authentic Tamil cuisine. They will make you feel like a treasured guest in their home and serve you the most delectable dishes. Maison meen kuzhambu and Uppukari were great, and went really well with the green chilly lemonade.
Stop here for the pattice, quiche’s and the baked goodies that are perfect to munch on while you’re on the go. This is a great place to stock up before you walk around the picturesque french quarter just around the corner.
Cafe Des Arts
We had breakfast here almost every day. The menu has good variety and plenty of healthy options. The ambience is that of a quaint little cottage with some quirky clothes and jewelry on sale too. A unanimous favorite was the caramel apple crepe with vanilla ice-cream.
Gelateria Montecatini Terme GMT
Speaking of ice cream, we got quite a high eating the gelato at this sea facing ice cream parlour. Its teeny tiny but has the most interesting flavours. Try the spicy chilly chocolate, Irish coffee, beer ice cream, amaretto (almond liqueur), firenzi (rum icecream)salted caramel and raspberry for sure. You won’t be disappointed.
Are you one of those people who wants to eat pizza even at a chinese restaurant? You’re going to love this one! It doesn’t sound like your conventional pizza place, but Tanto’s is always full of people.. and now I know why. This is hands down, the best wood fired oven pizza I’ve had in a long time! Devouring one freshly baked pizza after another, the cool outdoor ambience and sipping on some house lemonade made the afternoon just fly by. It’s on the way to Auroville and has a garden cafe set up.
Perfect for date night in a romantic heritage style restaurant. Ask for the specials of the day and you won’t be disappointed. Make sure you reserve a table in advance because it’s quite popular. The grilled tiger prawns in lemon caper butter sauce was the best dish we had there. Our friends loved the beef steak too.
Bread and Chocolate
They bake their bread and croissants fresh every day, so if you go early you will have a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Granola bowls, breakfast, quinoa and pomegranate lunch bowls, tartines and sandwiches too. The croissants are so light and buttery they practically melt in your mouth. The second best treat here is their peppermint dark chocolate ice cream with cacao nibs. Pure Bliss. For the dark and bitter chocolate aficionados, they also sell a variety of great flavoured cacao nibs and dark chocolate too.
Your kids will adore you for taking them to this one. The menu itself will make your mouth water. Their croque monsieur is perfection. Paired with a luscious smoothie or a fresh fruit medley, it is exactly what you need to feel that vacation glow. The smoothies are packed with flavour and all natural ingredients, and we had quite a tough time choosing which ones to order. We loved the mango and pineapple sorbet too.
Classy European style cafe nestled within the famous Villa Shanti hotel. This is the perfect place to end your trip. The service is great, the food delicious and kid friendly, and they have the best mango sorbet and great Pinacolada’s as well.
There you have it! Go forth and eat your way through this gorgeous destination.
