It was an exhilarating day filled with hiking through forests, walking up to cliffs and driving down winding tree lined roads. We were ready to take our island expedition to the next level. Yes it was time to chill on a beach. But not just any beach. Crystal Bay is on the west coast of Nusa Penida. A unique beach with black sand on one end of the curved shore and white coral sand at the other.
Adding to its character, is a little rock island a few meters offshore featuring a naturally formed window that makes the sunsets look even more picturesque. Many varieties of coral are strewn all along the beach and I felt such a pang of sadness that our reefs are slowly dying and washing ashore.
This quiet and relatively empty beach was an ideal place to relax and sip an ice cold Bintang on the sand as we watched the sun dip lower and set the sky afire with its blazing colors. Crystal Bay boasts of some of the best sunsets on this side of the world. I wouldn’t have believed it, but I was there. And it was EPIC.
