There is a rounded island in the curve of the Chao Phraya river almost always covered in a mist when seen from a distance. This lung shaped island is so lush and green. Such a contrast to the futuristic towering glass and metal towers in Bangkok. Bang Kachao, as it is locally known is a quiet and peaceful green island just a 5 minute boat ride away from Khlong Toei or Bang Na.
So we charted a path and made the trip by boat across the river. You can take a boat for 20 baht from Khlong Toei pier or on the other side at Bang Na Nok pier. We took the Khlong Toei boat and landed near the Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park And Botanical Garden. The botanical garden is scattered with ponds and lakes, teeming with fish that you can feed bread or fish food that’s sold there by the water side. We rented cycles at the pier itself and for 60 THB per day I would say that’s a fab price!
We cycled all over the place and stopped to observe a monitor lizard enjoying an afternoon snooze by the water. There were birds chirping and dried leaves swirling and falling all around us . It was nothing short of magical. A perfect break from our normal stressful city lives.
I would recommend bringing along some snacks or a picnic basket and enjoying the day there. You could also grab some eatables at the various shops and floating market too.
It’s a place that keeps calling you back. And once you’ve seen it, you’ll know why!
On the other side of Bang Kachao, is the more populated side, with cafe’s and a cosy modern hotel called the Bangkok Tree House. There are magnificent temples to be explored and a quaint floating market as well. You can navigate the entire island on cycle as the roads are peaceful and have dedicated cycle lanes.
